What “Imbeleko” means

In Xhosa tradition, Imbeleko is the ritual through which a newborn child is introduced to their ancestors and welcomed into their lineage. It is the first ceremony of belonging before a child can be told who to become, they are first rooted in who they already are.

“How do we root a child in identity before the world tries to define it for them?”

That is our mandate. Everything we build starts from this question.

Holiday Programme:
Open-Access Learning Camps

The Imbeleko IKS Holiday Programme is an open-access, short-term learning camp that offers children a structured, culturally grounded learning experience that blends Indigenous Knowledge Systems, creativity, play, digital exploration, and environmental awareness.

Afterschool Programme

A CAPS-aligned, culturally grounded learning programme for learners aged 7–18. Delivered through facilitator-led sessions, the programme is overseen by our Advisory Council of Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ensure cultural authenticity. Key pillars include:

Creative and Innovation Labs

Experiential laboratories where learners apply Indigenous Design Thinking to modern challenges. Using coding kits, digital art, and robotics, learners create tangible “Green Innovation” prototypes – reinforcing the concept of Africa as a historical and future site of technological advancement.

WHY NOW

Closing the gap before it closes us.

Across South Africa, families are moving from rural homesteads to cities like Johannesburg. With every move, a little more distance opens up between children and the elders, languages, and ceremonies that once taught them who they were.

At the same time, colonial and apartheid-era policy spent generations treating Indigenous knowledge as primitive folklore rather than what it actually is: a sophisticated, intact way of understanding the world.

Imbeleko exists to close both gaps — the geographic one and the historical one. We don’t treat Indigenous Knowledge Systems as a museum exhibit. We treat it as living infrastructurefor how children learn to think, build, and lead.

Imbeleko is founded and led by three South African women whose own expertise mirrors our mandate spanning Indigenous practice, education and curriculum design, and operations. Every piece of cultural content we create is co-created with the elders who hold that knowledge, never extracted from them.
